| WHY RUSSIAN WOMEN SEEK HUSBANDS FROM ABROAD In the past decade, a lot has been written about why Russian and Ukrainian women decide to join an international dating and marriage service like A Foreign Affair. HERE'S A HINT: Despite what you may have heard or read, for the vast majority of them citizenship in the US has NOTHING to do with it. It would be stupid for us to say - as so many others have said incorrectly - that all Russian and Ukrainian men are irresponsible, alcoholic, abusive, and unfaithful. This is drastically unfair and wrong. There are many very attentive, nice, productive, responsible, intelligent Russian and Ukrainian men! Russia and Ukraine are cultures full of men and women who are to be admired! Unfortunately, however, there are far too few men for the number of women who wish to marry and start a family. This is the single biggest reason so many women from the FSU seek out a foreign life-partner! Still, it is interesting to learn some of the lesser but still important challenges Russian women face every day in order for us to understand how their appreciation for foreign men is shaped. |
| RUSSIAN WOMEN ARE OFTEN DISCRIMINATED AGAINST WHEN APPLYING FOR WORK. Things have definitely improved for women in Russia over the past 10 years but there are still lingering issues in the workplace. Because there are no sexual harassment laws in Russia, women seeking employment will often write “No Intimate Relations” on their resumes and job applications to prevent being targeted. On average, women earn 40 cents for every dollar Russian men are paid. Women with children are highly discriminated against when seeking employment. In some areas, 85% of Russia's unemployed are women. FAMILY LIFE AND MARRIAGE CAN BE HARD FOR RUSSIAN WOMEN. *Again, we would never stereotype the many fine Russian men who never abuse their wives or children. Spousal and child abuse occurs in every country and culture including the USA, unfortunately. For various reasons, however, Russian women seem to experience a greater risk of abuse than Western women. Every fourth marriage in Russia encounters some sort of domestic violence. Every year, 14,000 Russian women are tragically killed by their husbands, versus 1200 in America according to the 2001 Bureau of Justice Statistics Report. A 2003 study by the Russian Ministry of the Interior involving victims of spousal abuse found that most women blame themselves for being abused by their husbands. A similar study showed that Russian women suffer abuse for long periods of time before reporting it due to the social stigma of being divorced and a single mother. Many single Russian moms interviewed will tell you there is a taboo among Russian men against raising another man's child, making it difficult for them to meet a suitable life-partner. Alcohol plays a part in the deaths of 2/3's of Russian men under 55. |
| WHY UKRAINIAN WOMEN SEEK HUSBANDS FROM ABROAD WOMEN IN UKRAINE ALSO OUTNUMBER MEN BY SMALLER, LESS DRASTIC NUMBER. According to a United Nations Report in 1998, women in Ukraine outnumbered men by 3.5 million. UKRAINIAN WOMEN ARE ALSO DISCRIMINATED AGAINST IN THE WORKPLACE. According to a study by Human Rights Watch in 2003, Ukrainian women have faced many obstacles to their full and equal participation in the labor force. Widespread employer discrimination against women limits women's access to jobs. The study goes on to state that discrimination against women in the Ukrainian workplace is not always intentional. Over 80% of Ukrainian women possess a university degree and are highly capable and productive yet women in Ukraine earn less than Ukrainian men and are more often unemployed. It is not uncommon for Ukrainian women to work long hours 6 days per week, averaging $300 in monthly income. UKRAINIAN WOMEN STRUGGLE TO FIND A FAMILY ORIENTED HUSBAND WHO WANTS TO RAISE CHILDREN. Ukrainian women are very traditional in their family views, often choosing to maintain their home and care for their children while their husband delivers the family income. They often speak of wanting an older, stronger man who will lead the family, of course, with total consideration of his wife's feelings and wishes. Ukrainian women typically marry between the ages of 19 - 25. The divorce rate in Ukraine exceeds 70%. Ukrainian women say their men are not interested in children and family responsibilities. I can't tell you how many Ukrainian women over the years have told me they were more or less abandoned by their husbands after becoming pregnant. AN ALARMING NUMBER OF UKRAINIAN GIRLS FALL PREY EVERY YEAR TO THE WORLD-WIDE ILLEGAL SEX TRADE. A study from 2002 by the University of Rhode Island and Zaporozhye State University reports that over 100,000 Ukrainian women are kidnapped annually and forced into illegal sex trades in Europe, Israel and the United States. Most are lured by deceptive advertisements for legitimate work abroad. (Regrettably - a few false Ukrainian marriage agencies have been sited as sources for women as well.) News of the still growing sex trade impacts women's decisions to look outside their culture for work, marriage, and travel, leaving many with fewer options in finding a life-partner and improving their lives overall. |
